        Details
The pharmaceutical industry plays a particularly important role in Spain, contributing approximately 2% to national GDP and generating stable, high-quality employment. Spain is recognized for its leadership in clinical research, accounting for the financing of over 85% of clinical trials conducted by pharmaceutical companies.
Nevertheless, a considerable gap remains in the early stages of biomedical research—an area that requires urgent attention and the implementation of concrete strategic measures. In this regard, the approval of the Pharmaceutical Industry Strategy 2024–2028 represents a crucial step forward. One of its core pillars is specifically focused on addressing this gap through effective public-private collaboration, with the aim of consolidating Spain as a HUB in pharmaceutical innovation.
This session will examine the conditions that either enable or delay the pharmaceutical industry's engagement in pre-competitive projects, identifying key levers for attracting investment, fostering innovation, and enhancing collaboration among stakeholders. These aspects will be explored through five main drivers: i) the availability of robust tools to identify high-potential projects; ii) public–private investment mechanisms; iii) efficient protocols for project selection, evaluation, and monitoring; iv) support for the creation of spin-offs as a means to transfer early scientific findings from academia; and v) leveraging complementary opportunities that are less complex.
